Volkswagon Engine History
- 1937 : The "Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH" company is founded on 28th May.
- 1938 : It is renamed "Volkswagenwerk GmbH" on 16th September.
- 1939 : Wolfsburg, work starts on manufacturing of the Volkswagenwerk plant which is to house production of the new vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
- During the Second World War : Volkswagenwerk manufacturing is switched to armaments. Some 20,000 forced labourers, prisoners of war, and later also concentration camp prisoners, work at the plant.
- 1945 : After the stop of the Second World War, in mid June liability for Volkswagenwerk is positioned in the hands of the British Military Government. Under the management of Major Ivan Hirst, mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle is begun.
- 1950 : The Type 2 goes into manufacturing on 8th March and increasing the company's product range.
- 1955 : Employees and dealers from Germany and overseas celebrate the invention of the one millionth Volkswagen Beetle in Wolfsburg.
- 1956 : A separate manufacturing base for the Transporter is developed in Hanover, at the same time setting down the extraction of today's Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand.
- 1972 : Volkswagen breaks the world car production record on 17th February with 15,007,034 units assembled.
- 1973 : The Passat is the initial model of the new generation of Volkswagen vehicles to go into production - with front-wheel drive, a water-cooled four-cylinder engine and a range of engines up to 110 bhp.
- 1974 : The first Golf is made at the Wolfsburg plant In January.
- 1976 : The first Golf GTI launched. The car, with its110 bhp engine, makes a real furore on the roads - and lays the basics for the birth of a legend.
- 1983 : Production of the second-generation Golf starts in June. The car is designed for a largely mechanical assembly process, and in the expressly put up final assembly hall, designated Hall 54, robots are deployed for the first time in vehicle production.
