Skoda Engine History
1895 : You might imagine it strange but our creators started by making push bikes! In Czechoslovakia during December, keen cyclists Vaclav Laurin (a mechanic) and Vaclav Klement (a bookseller) began designing and manufacturing bicycles. At that time, most Czechs were excitedly devoted, so they named their first company Slavia.
1899 : Their bicycles sold well, so Laurin and Klement make a decision to obtained the next step – and add motors. They started making motorbikes, modified the name of their company to the Laurin & Klement Co and chalked up a number of racing victories.
1905 : The Laurin & Klement Co might perform no wrong and their first car, the Voiturette A, was a vast achievement, becoming a classic in Czech motoring history.
1913 : The Company established a steady position in the increasing international market.
1925 : Because of the financial situation in Czechoslovakia at the time, Laurin and Klement required a strong industrial partner to support and modernize their company. They were now not only manufacturing a range of cars, but also trucks, buses, aeroplane engines and agricultural machinery, such as motorized ploughs. They merged with Pizen Skodovka Co and became Škoda.
1933 : Škoda had some complicated times. Happily, they made a come through with the Type A Škoda Popular, which was to become a legend in the second half of the decade.
1936 : Weight only 650kg the Škoda 420 Popular could reach 80km/h and was presented at a fantastic price as well. At one end of the scale, Populars provided as reliable utility automobiles, such as ambulances and delivery vans, at the same time as they finished a four-month trip to India with Czechoslovakia’s most famous goalkeeper in tow, and the roadster edition carry out brightly in the famous Monte Carlo rally.
1939 : Arrived World War 2.
1945 : Czechoslovakia was taken by the Germans and the period was a disturbing one for Škoda. The civilian car creation programme was very short and the majority of manufacturing was to support the German war effort.
1959 : Skoda also produced the Škoda 440 which developed into the first Octavia, named because it was the eighth model to be created after the end of World War 2.
1960 : The Czech economy did well up until the 1960s, then started to suffer because of latest technology in the western world.
1987 : Skoda carry on to make new and enhanced cars – in the shape of the Octavia, the Felicia, the MB range and the Rapid - but manufacture truly only raised again with the arrival of the Favorit model range.
1989 : When the Berlin Wall was carried down, approached new market economy situation. The government of the Czech Republic and the managing of Škoda started to search for a strong foreign partner in an effort to protected the company’s long time international competitiveness.
1990 : In December, they make a decision on Volkswagen and a joint venture started the following year. Škoda turn into the fourth brand in the Volkswagen group, alongside Volkswagen, Audi and Seat.
Since after that : Skoda has moved out from strength to strength, producing not only many outstanding cars but many happy drivers.
