Reconditioning Renault Engines History
1898 : Louis Renault and his brothers established their company. They rapidly made a name for themselves in motor racing notching up a string of succeed with their voiturettes.
1905-13 : The Renault factories adopted mass production techniques and Taylorism.
1929 : Renault updated its premises, starting up the first manufacturing line at Billancourt. The firm tried to keep the lid on costs in order to weather the economic crisis.
1945 : Renault was nationalized, becoming the Regie Nationale des Usines Renault (RNUR).
1978-80 : When researching for a successor for the Matra-Simca Rancho. Matra appeared with an new idea of a one-box car with 7 seats - suitable for the big family or for business/recreation - despite many different prototypes it was primarily known as project P17 and P18.
1984 : Since the Espace was originally concieved as a Talbot, the first edition that came out had the then popular forward slanting headlights, and obviously makes use of a lot of parts from the Talbot range. This edition is named the J11. As there was later a faceliftet version called phase-2, it makes sense to add a "phase-1" for this initial edition.
1988-91 : Clearly, now being badged a Renault, this had to be changed, so a only some years later, Matra made a facelift, to replace headlamps with the Renault style backward slanting type, and also the interior was redesigned, to make use of the Renault parts bin. The chassis was essentially unaltered. This car is referred to as J11 phase-2.
1991-97 : The J11-phase-2 was created until 1991, when the car was amended substancially. The chassis was redesigned, and the car appears much more smoothed inside and out. This was the J63, which is easily made out on its more smoothed shape and the side-mirrors, which were now integrated in the bonnet, - with a nice design-line running across the bonnet, between the mirrors. While this placement of the side mirrors IMO is esthetically nice, it is also very suitable, as you almost don't have to move your eyes, to notice whats going on in the mirrors.
1997-2002 : The car was modified again. Chassis modifications made a transverse engine mounting achievable, and on the external side, it got an even more smoothed and clean looking body fitted. The interior now sports the "space-ship look", with a digital speedometer in the centre of the dashboard. The dashboard itself appears more like impressive you have in your livingroom. Than a traditional car - and is a testament to Matra's ingeniuity and willingness to dare take a step away from mainstream - the precise characteristic that will make Matra remembered in many years to come.
